Episode three of Celebrity Cook-off. Since there's only eight episodes, we're getting closer to the end. Well, I guess you're always getting closer to the end. But that's not the point. Anyways. At the beginning of the episode, Rachael and Guy explain that the contestants will be cooking the favorite meals of three of the judges from Chopped. Also, two of those chefs just got done doing Next Iron Chef. So everyone knows they're good. They also find out they will be going head to head with a chef from the other team.
First up, fried chicken from Marcus Samuelsonn. Guy chooses Coolio and Rachael chooses Lou Diamond Phillips. Lou does a double dipped chicken battering that has the judges worried. He also chooses to make a soy sauce mixture for his chicken. I'm from the South, and just saying, I've never heard of putting a sauce with your fried chicken. Except hot sauce. Which is what Coolio does. He also uses corn starch to thicken his sauce (sounds okay to me) but the judges think that's a bad decision. However, after they taste both dishes, they love them.
Next, they have to make a tomato and basil sauce dish. Guy chooses his Italian stallion, Joey, and Rachael chooses Taylor. Joey is super confident and makes a tomato sauce he's made forever. Taylor follows Rachael's directions to the T and makes a very basic sauce and noodles. The judges like Joey's dish but think he's put a tad too much spices in it. Taylor's is delicious as well and the judges like Rachael's pasta choice, uh, I mean, Taylor's pasta choice.
Last, Alex Guarneschelli requests them to make a porterhouse steaks with compound butter. Cheech makes a very basic compound butter, but serves his steak, butter, and side salad in really nice pans. It's looks really cool, and the pans are shallow enough to be eaten out of. Summer runs around like a chicken with no head, but ultimately decides to make her butter with Bloody Mary ingredients, and the judges love it.
Now the winners! Round one goes to Coolio. Round two, Taylor. Round three, Summer. These were all upsets, I thought. Now the blind cook-off will be a three way. And they have to make grilled cheese. Both Cheech and LDP make very gourmet sandwiches, using hard cheese and gourmet breads. Joey, on the other hand, makes a grilled cheese with American and White Cheddar on white bread. He also puts some tomatoes and pickles in the form of a smiley on his sandwich. He totally expects to lose. When Rachael and Guy taste the sandwiches, they think neither Cheech or LDP's is very good because they're not grilled or cheesy. Joey's is by far the best. When he hears this, he falls on the ground. Unfortunately, Cheech's was just too greasy. How unfortunate. No more marijuana jokes.
Gold star for the week goes to Coolio. He knew what he wanted to do and did it. He took Guy's advice this week, unlike normal, and gave Cheech the idea of serving in the pans, which I thought was really good. He also made hot sauce, which impressed me, and Alex called him a crime against food because it should have been bad but was really good. Good job Coolio.
